Planning a wedding timeline for any season (and weather) in Portland, OR

Planning a wedding in Portland, Oregon means embracing a little bit of unpredictability, especially when it comes to the weather. But with the right timeline, you can make the most of your wedding day without getting drenched, overheating, or squinting directly into the sun during your ceremony.
These are realistic, season-specific timelines to help you structure your wedding day for the best light and photos. With photographer-backed advice on when to schedule your ceremony and portraits for the best golden hour magic.

Spring (March–May)
Portland in the spring is lush, romantic, and a little unpredictable, which is what makes it a popular time of year for a lot of Portland weddings. The city blooms with cherry blossoms, wildflowers, and lush green backdrops, but there’s also a chance of rain (and let’s be honest, maybe hail).
But even the chance of rain shouldn't necessarily deter you from a spring wedding in Portland. The Portland area is known for spring showers that are fleeting, with the sun often popping out from behind the clouds for a magical lighting effect.
Weather:Â Unpredictable with chances of light rain, lush green settings with flower blooms, cherry blossoms, and partial sun for moody lighting
Golden Hour: ~6:30–8pm by late spring
Ceremony Timing: Plan for 4–5pm with newlywed portraits afterwards
Ideal Portrait Time: 5–7pm, or later if you want to go for a blue hour light. If you get an overcast or partly cloudy day, portraits can be gorgeous at any time - cloud coverage is your friend when it comes to photos
Pro Tip: Build flexibility into your timeline. Spring weddings do best when there’s a weather backup plan. Opt for a venue with both indoor and outdoor spaces (like a wedding at Castaway or a Blockhouse wedding on film). Bring a stash of cute umbrellas or colorful rain jackets in case of rain.
Summer (June–August)
Summer weddings in Portland can be an absolute dream in terms of weather: long, golden evenings, dry skies, and lush gardens in full bloom. But Oregon summers these days can also mean record-breaking heatwaves and little to no coverage from clouds. You'll want to prepare yourself for the potential of sweltering temps and harsh midday sunshine.
Weather:Â Bright and dry with long golden hours and late sunsets
Golden Hour:Â 8-9pm
Ceremony Timing:Â 5:30-6:30pm to avoid harsh sun and still leave time for portraits
Ideal Portrait Time:Â 7-8:30pm for golden light
Pro Tip:Â Summer days in Oregon are long, with sunset not happening until 9pm around the end of June. You don't want you or your guests to suffer from sunburn or heat exhaustion, so a shaded area or indoor space with air conditioning is a must. You can also get misters, provide handheld fans for guests, or go all out with garden sprinklers for a fun way to cool down.

Fall (September–November)
Fall is my personal favorite season for weddings in Portland - I love how long the fall colors last, and with temperatures rising every year, fall is really the new summer. The only caveat: the sun sets fast, especially as you move into late October and November.
Weather:Â Can be rainy or sunny with lots of fall colors
Golden Hour:Â 5-6:30pm
Ceremony Tip:Â 3-4pm to catch warm fall light
Ideal Portrait Time:Â 4-5:30
Pro Tip:Â Choose a ceremony space with lots of natural light or plan for a covered outdoor location that works well in rain or shine. Opt for a wedding venue with trees to make the most of the changing leaves.
Winter (December–February)
Winter weddings in Portland are moody, intimate, and wildly underrated. With early sunsets and dramatic overcast skies, winters in Portland are so cozy and romantic. I recently shot a Portland courthouse wedding at the end of January and the weather was perfect - slightly drizzling but not too cold to take portraits outside. You can also occasionally get discounts on venues and vendors during the winter months, since it tends to be the off season for most wedding professionals.
Weather:Â Overcast, rainy, occasional snow, with early sunsets
Golden Hour:Â 3:30-4:30pm
Ceremony Tip:Â 1-2pm to leave time for portraits afterwards
Ideal Portrait Time:Â 2:30-4pm (before it gets dark)
Pro Tip:Â Winter weddings in Portland are the perfect opportunity for intimate venues, like this wedding at Dame restaurant. Likely too cold for a completely outdoor wedding - consider some of these other intimate Portland micro wedding venues.
