Engagement photoshoot on film at McMenamins Edgefield
Before Hannah and Dylan’s Portland wedding next summer, we met up at McMenamins Edgefield in Troutdale for their engagement shoot. McMenamins Edgefield is hands-down one of my favorite photoshoot locations in the Portland area - especially for an intimate engagement session on film.
Hannah and Dylan reached out to me earlier this year for wedding photos for their intimate micro wedding at Mildred Hall - and they wanted to do an engagement shoot beforehand. I love when I get the chance to meet and shoot with a couple before their wedding day. It's the perfect trial run to feel more comfortable on camera when it matters most.
Edgefield is a dream photoshoot location for this kind of session. You’ve got a wild mix of backgrounds: sprawling woods, open lawns, weird art, garden paths, a golf course, and mini bars tucked into random corners. Every few feet feels like a new photo op.
We started up in the wooded area above the main grounds, wandered the golf course and grabbed a few shots near the golf flags and on the benches. Then headed down through the gardens and got the classic red door photo. We even stumbled across a bush with flowers blooming in the shape of a heart.
Whether you’re planning your own engagement session or just scoping out photo-friendly Portland wedding venues, McMenamins Edgefield is a solid contender. It has everything: historic charm, quirky energy, and the kind of variety that can make it unique and personal to each couple.
I also had to stop into one of the tiny bars to grab a couple shots at the cutest little drink spot. We wrapped up the session with a couple of Polaroids on top of the hill as the sun set over the grounds.
Thinking about booking your own engagement photo package on film?
I offer a few different options—from quick one-hour shoots to full “day in the life” sessions that feel more like a documentary of your favorite places or activities.
Engagement photoshoot ideas:
– Recreate your first date (like this Wes Anderson inspired engagement shoot)
– Explore your neighborhood
– Hang at home with your pets
– Go to your favorite dive bar, brewery, or brunch spot
– Get tattoos together
– Go thrifting then shoot with the new fits
All engagement shoots include a mix of film and digital. You can bundle an engagement session with a wedding photo package or book it solo - whatever works best for you.
